Ginny sighed and stretched out longways on her couch, her feet propped up on the armrests. After her thorough shower, there was no evidence that she had spent most of the day sweating. She changed into a washed sports bra and long green and yellow athletic shorts. With a glass of Ogden's in one hand and a Quidditch Monthly in the other, resting on her stomach, she thought it was the start of a brilliant evening. After all, there was an article calling the Harpies one of the favorites for the League Cup this year. It had been a rather good day, despite the familiar ache in her muscles.

Her long day of work was just like any other: paperwork, research, meetings, and more paperwork, except for the fact that today, she was engaged.  Hermione put an invisibility charm on her ring; she and Ron decided not to tell anyone yet, and they'd drop the news at the next Burrow gathering, but Hermione could still feel it on her left ring finger all day, a constant reminder of her sealed future.  Of course she wanted to marry Ron; she didn't even have to think when he asked her to be his wife.  She'd never even thought of another future for herself.  By the end of the day, she was just buzzing to tell someone, and of course she wanted to tell her best female friend.  She was part of Ron's family, after all, and he did say he wanted to tell family first, so technically she wasn't breaking the rules, was she?  After stopping at her flat and dropping off her briefcase, she changed from her work robes into comfy muggle jeans and a dark blue t-shirt before apparating to Holyhead.  She knocked on Ginny's door, rocking back and forth on her heels.  Perhaps she should've owled first to make sure she'd be home...

"Oh, bloody hell... WHO IS IT?" Rolling her eyes, she figured it was just Katie who was coming over to nag her about cleaning or some such thing. Regardless, she didn't want to keep her waiting for too long. Throwing her legs off of the couch and sitting upright, she drank deeply of her whisky. Setting the empty glass and the magazine on the table already cluttered with debris, Ginny pushed herself up off of the couch. Grumbling all the way to the door, she pulled the door open and, opening her mouth to start complaining, immediately closed her mouth. "Sorry about that, Hermione. I thought you were Katie and I was about to hassle you.. so, ah, come in!" Stepping out of the doorway, she pulled the door further open and beckoned her in with her hand. "... And, eh, sorry about the mess too.. and my outfit." She laughed easily and clapped Hermione on the shoulder, intending to steer her through the nearest doorway into the kitchen. "Maybe it's best that you sit in the kitchen--it's the cleanest place in my flat. Do you want a drink?"

Hermione couldn't help but roll her eyes as she heard the always hot-headed Ginny yelling and storming across the flat before the door flew open.  Grinning, she couldn't help but laugh.  "And this is how you speak to Katie?  How affectionate, must be a teammate thing..." she mused aloud, following Ginny through to the kitchen, noting the mess and the liquor smell on her breath.  "Oh-- no thank you.  Work early in the morning.  Are you... celebrating something?"  She sat down at Ginny's kitchen table.  "Is this a bad time?  I realise I should've probably rung or owled first."

"Yes, well, I expect it's got something to do with that. We spend quite a lot of time together these days." Ginny laughed at that and shrugged easily, quickly grabbing the bottle of Ogden's sitting on her table and the empty glass before returning to Hermione. "All right, well, suit yourself! Just celebrating another successful practise. Don't you worry your head about it being a good or bad time. I can't be arsed to learn proper cleaning charms." Grinning, she poured herself another glass and, taking her time with this one, took a careful sip. "So, what brings you to Holyhead? You can't have just wanted to see what a right tip my flat is with all of the rubbish everywhere. Are you all right?" Raising her eyebrow, she leaned over the table and eyed Hermione up. "You look tickled pink."

Hermione hoped that Ginny's firewhisky consumption was not becoming a habit, as she was sure that Ginny had many successful practices.  "What?  Oh, I'm fine!  I need an excuse now to stop by for a visit?  I've missed you."  She averted her eyes for a moment, wondering if she'd looked "tickled pink" to her workmates today.  Or perhaps she only appeared that way to Ginny, since she knew her as well as anyone.  "On second thought, d'you have any wine?"

Ginny wasn't sold on Hermione's insistence of her "fine-ness" but dropped the subject nonetheless... for now. Taking another swig of whisky, she sighed at the warming sensation. "I think I've got some White Zinfandel... I may have picked it up knowing you liked it." Arching her eyebrow, she grinned and pushed up from the table, moving about the kitchen to gather the supplies. After working the cork out of the wine and pouring a healthy wine glass full, she handed it to Hermione and settled down again. "No, you don't need an excuse, but I can't imagine you'd be this comfortable in a rubbish pile unless you had a reason for being there, yeah? Just tell me! I know something's going on, Hermione."

While Ginny moved about in the kitchen, Hermione slipped her wand from her pocket and silently removed the invisibility charm on her sparkly ring.  "White Zinfandel would be lovely, I'm impressed you remembered. " She slipped her wand back into her pocket before Ginny turned back around, and she reached out with her left hand to take the glass of wine, a nervous sort of smile tugging at the corners of her mouth.  "All right, all right.  I suppose I do have a bit of news to share..." she watched Ginny's eyes, wondering if she'd catch on as she brought the glass to her lips, taking a healthy sip.

“I’ve taken a couple bludgers to the head recently, but I haven’t lost my long-term memory yet.” Ginny replied, raising her glass to her lips to take a quick, satisfying sip. “So, what’s the news? Must be important if you’re Apparating to Holyhead to share it.” Oblivious to the sparkly addition on Hermione’s hand, she found herself watching Hermione’s face curiously. Ginny had never excelled at guessing games.

“Oh it’s not terribly important,” Hermione waved that left hand dismissively, this time closer to Ginny’s face.  She was amused at just how oblivious Ginny was.  With matters of jewelry and the like, Ginny was almost as clueless as Harry... not that Hermione knew a great deal about the art of accessorizing, but she did live in close quarters with two fashion-conscious witches for seven years.  Therefore, a smidgen of that rubbed off on her and she at least noticed things like jewelry and make-up, even if she had no strong opinions about them.  Unless someone was obviously wearing far too much make-up, which Hermione had always found to look a bit silly.  Taking another sip of wine with her right hand this time, she dramatically slid her left across the table.  “Your brother’s asked me to marry him.”  Her tone was matter-of-fact, with only a hint of excitement.  Perhaps she was still in shock.

“Oi! Get your bloody hand out of my face.” Ginny gave Hermione an exaggerated dirty look, clearly still unaware of the ring. Even if she had noticed, Ginny was bound to not really get what it was anyway--perhaps Hermione had treated herself to a new piece of jewelry. She would be much more inclined to buy herself one of those brilliant new racing brooms she read about... It was only when Hermione put her hand on the table that it became clear it wasn’t bare and that was no ordinary ring. Before Hermione’s mouth even opened, Ginny’s stomach sank to somewhere about her ankles and twisted into a very unpleasant knot. So that was it, then. The words hit her like an unexpected bludger to the temple and left her feeling just as queasy. “W-well, isn’t that brilliant? I’m glad he’s finally, ah, worked up the nerve.” She tried to smile warmly, but she was sure it looked a bit odd. Feeling the urge to move, to do something other than sit idly, Ginny pushed back the chair. “Let’s have a hug then, yeah? Congratulations!” Thankful that her voice hadn’t declared mutiny, she sounded convincingly happy for Hermione.

Hermione was still reeling at her statement to process Ginny’s reaction; her announcement to Ginny made it all feel so real and she relaxed a bit into the hug.  “We’ll be sisters.  I mean, we’ve always known it, but it’s so good to actually know it, d’you know what I mean?”  She realized she was a bit inarticulate, and was quite pleased with her decision to tell Ginny.  “Try to act surprised next week or whenever Ron decides to reveal the big news it to your whole family.  He made me promise not to tell anyone but I just couldn’t help it.”  She took a step back and sat down, taking a few healthy gulps of her wine now, feeling a bit more relaxed.

“I think I could handle it. If I could convince Mum that Fred and George weren’t getting into trouble, I can act surprised for Ron.” Rolling her eyes with a hollow chuckle, Ginny tried to relax despite her heart hammering in her ears. “Hold tight, all right? Got to use the loo.” She needed to get out of there. Swallowing the swelling lump in her throat, she closed the door and muffled a sob into her hands. How am I supposed to do this? she thought desperately, splashing cool water against her face. She needed an excuse, because she couldn’t keep the act up. Exhaling and settling on one, Ginny wiped her face and strode back into the kitchen. “It’s really brill that we’ll officially be sisters. Listen, I’m a real sod for doing this, but I’m late to meet Katie and I’ve really got to get dressed. Owl me this week and we’ll go for a bite--my treat.”

When Ginny retreated to the loo, Hermione took the opportunity to finish off her wine and wash off her own glass in the sink.  No need to add to Ginny’s clutter.  She could tell something wasn’t right when Ginny returned; her eyes looked a bit glassy.  Her analysis was cut short when Ginny told her of her plans to meet Katie and Hermione’s brow shot up apologetically.  “Oh, Merlin’s beard, I’m so sorry-- I should’ve known you’d have plans.  I promise-- the next bit of news I’ve desperately got to share with you I’ll make sure to owl ahead of time.”  She lunged forward for another quick hug and kissed Ginny on the cheek.  “See you this week-- I’m holding you to that!”  Hermione was then out the door, unable to shake the feeling that Ginny was very upset about something.  She made a mental note to ask about that next time, and then she Disapparated back to London.
